John Marshall Loving, Sr.

April 5, 1948 — August 17, 2024

John Marshall Loving, Sr. was the seventh child born on April 5, 1948, in Massies Mill, Virginia, to the late William Chester and Kate Viola Oakcrum Loving. On August 17, 2024, he peacefully transitioned at the Albemarle Health and Rehabilitation Center inCharlottesville, Virginia, to his heavenly home.

John Marshall grew up in Massies Mill, Virginia, and attended Nelson County Public Schools. At the age of 12, he accepted his Lord and Savior, was baptized in the Tye River, and joined Oak Hill Baptist Church.John Marshall and Frances Jean Toliver entered into Holy Matrimony on September 14, 1974. To this union were born two children: John Marshall Loving, Jr. and Joy Denise Loving.

John Marshall had a strong work ethic and was a man of many skills. If he didn't know what, when, or how to do it, no one did. He worked jobs in factories, farming, and logging. He also worked for many years as a custodian in the Nelson County school system until his health failed him. He was always there to loan a helping hand to family, friends, and strangers. His motto was, "If you need me, I'll be there as soon as I can."

In addition to his parents and mother-in-law Christine Toliver, John Marshall was preceded in death by his brother Chester William Loving and son John Marshall Loving, Jr. 

To cherish his memory, John Marshall is survived by his devoted wife Frances Jean Toliver Loving, daughter Joy Denise Loving, grandson Malik D. Loving, and great granddaughter Serenity Loving. Also, John Marshall is survived by his siblings Joseph McKinley Loving (Shirley Thompson) of Upper Marlboro, MD; Robert Dandridge Loving of Staunton, VA; George Massie Loving (Debra Campbell) of Arrington, VA; Sadie Rebecca Mae Loving Jackson (Jerome) of Fulton, VA; Rachel Earlene Loving Hicks (James) of Clinton, MD; and Bernice Lee Loving Sanders (John) of Davidsonville, MD. He is also remembered by special friends Russell and Betty Ann Toliver Dillard.

A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, August 24, 2024 at Byrum-Parr Funeral Home by Rev. Dr. H. Annette Diggs with burial to follow in Oak Hill Memorial Gardens. Viewing will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
