Judy Gallier Payne

Judy Gallier Payne, 84, of Amherst, died on Sunday, August 18, 2024 in Lynchburg. Born in Buena Vista, April 11, 1940, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Carl and Dorothy Mae Cunningham Gallier.

Judy had been a nurse for Lynchburg Eye Physicians, working closely with ophthalmologists Dr. William Hobbs and Dr. Robert Whisnant. She was a devoted member of Amherst Baptist Church as well as a member of her beloved sorority, Beta Sigma Phi in Lynchburg. Judy also enjoyed reading, ceramics, and cooking. 

She is survived by her son, Michael S. Payne of Amherst; a close friend, Martha B. Rice, and other loving relatives and friends.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, George Clay Payne, and a brother, Joseph “Wayne” Gallier.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 27, 2024 at Amherst Baptist Church by Pastor John Perkins and Pastor Bryan Painter. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, August 26, 2024 at Byrum-Parr Funeral Home.
