Shirley Ann Hagar, 88, departed this life on Saturday, March 8, 2025. She was born in Nelson County, May 29, 1936, to the late Samuel and Annie Allen. She was preceded in death by her husband James W. Hagar.

Shirley attended School in Nelson County. She was employed and retired from University of Virginia after 30 years of service. Shirley accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior at an early age and became a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church. She served faithfully until her health began to decline. She served in the Deaconness Ministry for over 30 years, and she also served as treasurer, financial secretary, choir member, youth director, and member of the Ladies Circle. Shirley enjoyed singing. She and her sisters formed the gospel group known as, “The Allen Sisters.” Her favorite song was, “Surely, I will.” Shirley really enjoyed getting together with her family and watching game shows, and soap operas. She is well known for her bright unwavering spirit, macaroni and cheese & string beans.

She leaves to cherish her memory, seven children, James (Nancy) of Lynchburg, Laverne (David) of Appomattox, Marvin (Marylin), Joyce (Alfred), of Waynesboro, Gwendolyn (Travis) of North

Garden, William, and Barbara of Roseland; two sisters, Roberta (James) Hudson of Roseland and Louise Toliver of Amherst; a brother, Louis (Mary) Allen of Roseland; 16 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; 8 great-great grandchildren, and a host other loving relatives and friends.

In addition to her beloved husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Betty Lee Vaughan, Geneva Allen, and Constance Toliver; her brother, Russell Allen; son-in-law, Kenneth Giles; granddaughter, Shelly Padilla, and two great-granddaughters, Rebecca Mongold and Zahara Hubbard-Giles.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, March 15, 2025 at Byrum-Parr Funeral Home by Rev. James Hagar, Eulogist, with burial to follow in Zion Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.
