Virginia "Jennie" Alice Harvey

Virginia Alice Harvey “Jennie”, 99, of Roseland, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 28, 2024. Born in Roseland, VA May 3, 1925, she was the daughter of the late James William Harvey and Mary Woodson Harvey.

Virginia graduated from the Woman’s Missionary Union Training School in Louisville, KY with a Master of Arts degree in Religious Education and a BS degree from James Madison University in Harrisonburg, VA. In Virginia, she was a teacher in several school districts including the Amherst County Public Schools and Lynchburg City Schools. In Lynchburg, she was the Director of Religious Education at Rivermont Avenue Baptist Church but later taught math at Sandusky Middle School until her retirement from the Lynchburg City Schools.

Virginia was a member of Jonesboro Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School, sang in the adult church choir, and served on numerous church committees. She strongly believed in family, church, world missions and community service. She enjoyed gardening, knitting, and family activities.

She is survived by two nephews, Dr. Paul W. Stairs, and Stephen H. Stairs; four nieces, Jenny S. Parrish, Barbara Harvey Myers, Dorothy Harvey Bryant Linder, and Mary Lynne Bryant Harse, and numerous other great nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her four brothers, James Harvey, Edward Harvey, Richard Harvey, and William Harvey; her two sisters, Mary Harvey Bryant, and Frances Harvey Stairs, and one niece, Elizabeth Bryant Stevens.

A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, November 2, 2024, at Byrum-Parr Funeral Home in Roseland, VA by Rev. John Campbell, with burial to follow in Jonesboro Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
