William D. Wingfield passed away on October 7, 2024 at the age of 92. Born in Athens, Georgia in January 1932, he was the son of the late Chandler Reaves Wingfield and Caroline Davis Wingfield.
He was also preceded in death by his brother, Chandler R. Wingfield, Jr. and his loving wife Kathryn of 56 years. He was a faithful and dedicated caregiver for her throughout her battle with Alzheimer’s.
He is survived by his two children, Debbie McCann (Ed) of Massies Mill, Virginia and Allan Wingfield (Ann) of Oswego, New York. He is also survived by nine grandchildren: Edward McCann (Katie), David McCann (Ally), Michelle Cornett (Kevin), Nathaniel Wingfield (Martha), Isaac Wingfield (Emily), Ethan Wingfield, Eliza Wingfield, Gabriel Wingfield (Megan), and Susannah Wingfield. He was also blessed to have 19 great grandchildren.
He spent his growing up years living in Georgia and Florida and enjoyed sharing stories about living on an orange grove. After college, he served three and a half years in the Army and loved to tell stories of his experiences in Greenland. He went on to attend Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. He served his Lord and Savior as a Minister of Education at Trenton Street Baptist Church in Harriman, Tennessee, Belmont Baptist Church in Roanoke, Virginia, Rivermont Avenue Baptist Church in Lynchburg, Virginia, Salem Baptist Church in Salem, Virginia, and Central Baptist Church in Waycross, Georgia. In his retirement, he served as a hospital chaplain at Lewis Gale Hospital in Salem, Virginia. While living at Liberty Ridge in Lynchburg, he enjoyed leading daily devotionals and helping to lead the singing on Sunday mornings.
A celebration of life service will be held 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, October 15, 2024 at Clifford Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 10:30 a.m. until the start of the service. The family will hold a private burial at a later date.
